Pathology Laboratory, Taunton, Somerset

This project was much more than the usual office conversion. The client, Ashley House Plc, required an existing office building to be completely transformed into a new Pathology Laboratory from which the end user IPP would provide a full pathology service in compliance with HBN 15 standards. This was the first privately delivered pathology service within the UK delivering direct to the NHS.

Not only did the work involve the complete stripping out of the existing building and the transformation of the pathology unit to the highest professional standard, but other conditions also had to be met. This was a fast track build project which would involve high quality precision work and a requirement for detailed co-ordination of design and implementation at all stages.

The building was designed around a central hub which is the main processing area and which incorporates the first automated pathology analysing track in the country. Two of the laboratories were constructed to category 3 standard and these will be used for testing dangerous pathogens.

Acheson had recently worked with Ashley House Plc on the construction of a Doctors' Surgery in Corfe Castle, so were delighted to be working with them again on this project. Following the successful completion of the project Acheson were awarded a further pathology laboratory refurbishment within Musgrove Hospital, Taunton.

Acheson has an excellent track record in the health sector and has built many doctors' surgeries, medical centres and care homes.
